Little French antique ironstone sauce boat

45.00

Small French antique white ironstone gravy or sauce boat.

This is a rare antique ironstone gravy boat, unique style to the Bordeaux area. This one is shaped like a duck, but they do come in other variations. I have heard two theories by the locals of Bordeaux, about why they are this shape. The first theory is that they were used for a speciality red wine based duck sauce and each person would have a individual sauce boat. The second explanation was that a speciality red wine was put in the container and would be poured into the mouth directly from the spout.

This is a lovely antique example, it has age related tea staining and crazing to the glaze - see photos.

height 8 cm, length 19 cm, or approx 3" x 8"
