French antique rustic ochre and terracotta confit jar

95.00

French antique terracotta confit pot. 19th C ~ France ~ c 1840-1900

Gorgeous French terracotta confit pot, sourced in the Bordeaux area, which is where this style of pot originates from. Originally made to store duck, goose and pork meats. It was a quintessential item in French kitchens for centuries and has great decorative appeal.

The top half has two beautifully hand moulded handles and a deep ohre yellow glaze. The lower half is terracotta. The reason for this is that they would be buried halfway up in the ground of cellars to keep the meats cool. The top of the jar was sealed with duck or goose fat and then covered with either wood or cloth. Over the years some of the glaze and terracotta has chipped in places, and there is nibbling to the rim, all of which lends to its authenticity and charm - see photos
